Pete and Scarlett are ready to Break Up

It seems that Scarlett's debut last year at the music scene with Tom Waits' tribute album Anywhere I Lay my Head wasn't as successful as she hoped it to be (although it wasn't a disappointment either). Therefore she decided to follow Zooey Deschanel's footsteps and collaborate with pop singer/songwriter Pete Yorn. Their album is titled Break Up and is coming out on September 8th on Atco/Rhino label. After a quick listen I found the album much better than I expected. A mix of pop and folk (following She & Him's successful style) that suites both their voices. However, as opposed to She & Him, Pete is the dominant figure in this duo with Scarlett coming off mostly as a backup voice (with few exceptions like Relator). Then again, Scarlett's voice ain't so vivid and clear as Zooey's, so the choice was more than wise. Nevertheless, we would more than love to see a Zooey - Scarlett music faceoff! But since this seems a bit too far off (at least for reality), we'll just have to stick to what we have. So enjoy Pete's and Scarlett's first single Relator!

Maps are certain that Love will Come

Today's Clip of the Day comes from the Maps' new album Turning the Mind. The song is the beautiful Love will Come and the simple clip I made is from the movie The Go-Getter, starring our beloved Zooey Deschanel. Hopefully YouTube won't delete this one too, like it did to our Editor's clip on our last post!

Calvin Harris may be Ready for the Weekend but we ain't!

Scottish electro-wiz Calvin Harris released his debut I Created Disco back in 2007 and instantly made a name for himself. I actually really liked his debut with all the retro sounds and was looking forward to his follow-up. That is until I gave his latest release Ready for the Weekend a listen. This is probably one of the worst albums I've heard in years. Cheesy 80's synths with uninspiring beats, ridiculous 'We get a thrill from clapping our hands, we find the nearest girl and ask her to dance' lyrics and an overall feeling of replicating the worst of the 80's and 90's dance anthems (the ones you know you are too embarrassed to admit you danced to back then). Nope...first time around 2 years ago it was fun, now it's simply lame and boring (if not totally ridiculous). I'll pass big time!

Noah and the Whale last more than The First Days of Spring

Noah and the Whale are one of those bands that have nearly everything spot on for me. First off, their name is a tribute to Noah Baumbach and his film The Squid and the Whale. Then they quite often sign their posts as 'Sic Transit Gloria' (phrase from Wes Anderson's Rushmore). Even their music style (a pop-folk mix) brings memories of Belle & Sebastian or the Magic Numbers. What else do you need to make this band an instant favorite? Well, perhaps some really amazing music and a stunning new album!

The First Days of Spring (coming out September 1st on Mercury label) is simply my favorite summer album. I've listened to it endless times during the last couple of weeks while on holiday and I came to love it. After their debut last year (Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down) Noah have come back with a hurt soul and a musical jewel. Both female singers have left the band since their debut with Laura Marling leaving front-man Charlie Fink with a broken heart. This more than obviously inspires him throughout the album and probably throughout the forthcoming film that will accompany it. Beautiful melodies, great orchestrations and a dreamy journey from these Londoners that is simply perfect. Enjoy!

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
