Quick Fixes of Music Reviews
This week I’ve been trying to catch up with a number of record releases but with all the work pilled up in the office it’s not that easy (impossible actually). Nevertheless, here are a couple more reviews (not that fresh…but then again we can’t always get our hands on everything that’s coming out).
Islands – Arm’s Way
Islands are yet another indie band from Canada (how many are there out there?). They were created after the breakup of the Unicorns and debuted back in 2006 with Return to the Sea. At the end of March this year they released Arm’s Way, a follow up that doesn’t really live up to our expectations. Their music sounds familiar, too familiar unfortunately. I was trying to remember where I’ve heard their songs before and the honest truth is everywhere. Their sound is similar to so many records of the past, from Mercury Rev to even Pulp (not good for a record released in 2008). Coming from a country that has found the magic formula of indie rock, the Islands sound too british for their own sake (good solid songs that are way too easy to forget). Good luck next times mates..

Okay – Huggable Dust
Okay is basically Marty Anderson, singer/songwriter who suffers from Crohn’s disease which confines him to his bedroom. I first heard of him from mystery falls down’s blog so I’ll not be able to comment much about him or his previous albums but rather confine myself as well to stating my opinion on what I got from this album.
Huggable Dust is lo-fi pop bursting with love and pain. On first hearing, I got the instant feeling of a really personal album that I only got when I first heard Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s debut album Answering Machine Music (instantly fell in love with it). Anderson is throwing everything he has in this album, from instruments and sounds to personal memories and feelings on a rollercoaster of 18 tracks. His music has been heard (although not too much) before and his compositions and lyrics are far from perfect or exceptional. It is his sincerity and honesty though which make this album overcome these drawbacks and make us recommend everyone to have a listen (even if you don’t get hooked to it at the end).
