Indie Chicks we Love - Laura-Mary Carter

We posted about Laura-Mary a few days ago, reviewing her debut album under the dynamic duo Blood Red Shoes. While we were not totally impressed with the album, we were more than impressed with her. Laura is not the typical indie chick, in the sense that she is gorgeously sexy even without the guitar in her hands. Most people just reference her as the inverse Meg White but for us, she is on a league of her own. We really don’t care if she is ever able to make it big with Blood Red Shoes, she already won us over..

No Age - Nouns

This review really troubled me for a while. I must have listened to No Age’s new album more than a dozen times during the last couple of weeks, yet I’ve been delaying the review constantly. I guess I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I definitely love it (no doubt about that), but whether it deserves more than that was troubling me.
No Age are basically a duo from Los Angeles, Dean Spunt and Randy Randall, both previous members of Wives. They are part of the new lo-fi punk scene, along with Times New Vikings and Jay Reatard. In other words, home-made punk with lots and lots of noise. With the current music scene leaning towards more mainstream sound (with more and more bands labeled as indie or alternative only to gather initial momentum, usually through myspace and other social networks), this resurrection of lo-fi punk sets me back to the indie rock scene of the late 80’s-early 90’s, with bands like Sonic Youth, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr. and Polvo producing noisy punchy rock and creating some of the best albums in years. However, the reference to such names is by no means a comparison to this new scene (this would just be so uneven for the new guys and plain foolish), but the sound and the influences are there; time will tell if this turns into something more.
Nouns is the first proper album for No Age, since their debut Weirdo Rippers was basically a collection of singles. This is evident through the album, with Nouns sounding more compelling and defiantly more complete (and better produced). At first, you mind find their sound too noisy to make any sense out of it, however, underneath all those guitar screams and white noise lie some beautiful tunes and guitar riffs. Give each track a second (and third) chance and you’ll start listening to a different album altogether. If however you are looking for something peaceful to listen while relaxing after a hard day’s work or are just accustomed to typical 4 minute songs with the usual heart-breaking lyrics and well-defined sections, please stay away! Then again, if you are able to mute the noise away, you’ll find some of the most satisfying glimpses of rock. So it’s really up to you to decide if it’s worth the effort. For me at least, this album was really worth all that noise!

Sleeper Hold and Ripped Knees (for which I had to make a video cause I just love it) are my favorite tracks.

Foals - Antidotes

We needed to wait three more years since the last release of a rock/indie record with a greek frontman. Last time around, it was up to Alex Kapranos with the second album of Franz Ferdinand to rock the Greek pride (that sounded quite cheesy). Now the time has come for Yannis Philippakis to step up to the mic, with his Oxford band Foals.
Foals have enjoyed quite some hype (yet another band taking advantage of all the internet buzz) and their album was eagerly anticipated (with BBC Radio One hosting them in their Top-10 list of artists to look out for in 2008). Along with Battles, they are considered the new breed of Math Rock (oh how I love genre labeling), a mix of post-rock, complex melodies and asychnronous guitar lines.
While the album does not provide the biggest variety in songs, it does give a distinct sound to the Foals which is quite different from most indie bands out there. And Yianni's voice is really suiting their style, nothing special but providing the necesary character to the group and letting the music do most of the talking. All in all, a really good debut album by a band that is definetly worth looking out for (hopefully we'll get the chance to see them live sometime soon...at least when Philippakis feels homesick).
Cassius and Mathematics are the best tracks for me on the album, along with Olympic Airways (just for the title!)

Do You Like Rock Music?

Mix brit pop with a dash of arcade fire-like choruses and a pinch of unintelligible dadaism and you got Rock Music, that is at least what British Sea Power like to proclaim. Welcome to these guys' third attempt to show off their charisma in creating incredible pop hooks with mildly dark overtones out of thought-provoking themes as well as somewhat irrelevant and often incoherent material.

Although the protagonists of their newest album are among other things Polish plumbers, vintage bicycles and subatomic physics, this shouldn't deter you from enjoying their grand composures, lush tunes, heavy guitar outbursts, and of course their trademark bittersweet croonings. Their sound is definitely not consistent from track to track and in this aspect there is small resemblance to their previous work, but it's this low-grade diversity in musical expression that makes their lyrics stand out as a characteristic monument of BSP's intellectual madness.

In the end, you can say what you want about those brits, but one thing you can't deny is that they will fool you into singing along their lunatic poetry. Isn't that what Rock music is about anyway?

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
