It's that time of the year again to pack everything up and leave the burning pithole for a magestic island (or two). The ship is sailing tonight, so see ya all after a couple of weeks when we return from our Summer Holidays!!

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are reaching Higher than the Stars

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have just announced the release of a new EP and a couple of singles for this coming fall. The New York band that managed to bring a fresh new sound into an almost dying scene will be releasing their new single Come Saturday on September 8 and their new EP Higher Than the Stars on September 22. Hopefully we'll get our hands on this material earlier for you, but until then here's a live version of their new song Higher than the Stars. Enjoy!

Is Change a Good Thing?

As you can see, we changed Athens66's background to match our content better. The question is obvious; is change a good thing or not? We're waiting for you say on this...

When the Reverend's Silence is Talking to The Makers

The Reverend Jon McClure and the Sheffield Makers are back with their second album French Kiss in the Chaos (out July 27th). This is their new (bound to be a brit hit) single Silence is Talking. Enjoy!

Waiting for a Paper Heart

Another one on my watch-list for the post summer vacation period. Michael Cera yet again starts in a corny and naive story; in other words perfect!

The Films bring back Scorpio..Oh!

American indie band The Films are back after 2006's debut Don’t Dance Rattlesnake. Oh, Scorpio is the title of their new release that is available on US a nd Japan (coming to Europe in the fall). The album is a generally nice suprise, with good, solid melodies and catchy lyrics. Don't expect anything too deep or profound and you'll be happily suprised by a band that I expect to get more famous soon...but that's just my opinion. Anyway, I really enjoyed the album for its pure and straight approach (a perfect timing also as the sound is very summer-ish). Enjoy!

Delorean Release Ayrton Senna

Delorean are a Spanish group that fuses electro with dance beats in the likes of Air France or Phoenix. They already have released a couple of albums and on June 15th they released a fresh new EP titled Ayrton Senna. Fresh and perfect for this year's hot summer. Enjoy!!

PS. See comments for our new Mediafire channel for fresh music and let's hear what you have to say!

Watchmen are A Changin'

Simply one of the best opening titles of all time...although it took me quite some time to finally see the movie :-)

Sigur Ros on Blogotheque

When one of our favorite bands is featured in one of our favorite sites, the result is bound to bring a smile on our face. Thanks to BLR for pointing out the Sigur Ros take of The Take Away Shows on Blogotheque. The show was filmed in la Closerie bistro in Paris. Enjoy..

Passing Mellowdrone

After BLR's proposal I gave Mellowdrone a run for their money. I never heard of them before (or so I think) so I put their LP Angry Bear on my mp3 player. Good but nothing special. I'll probably pass for now...What's your take on it?

Ban Grizzly Bear

No...No...No...I refuse to review the new Grizzly Bear album..don't ask me why. Anything better I could do?

PS. The Junior Boys track Work has nothing to do with this..I just love it!

Pistol Disco offer us Evergreen

It’s that time again…time to introduce another Swedish band! Seems that the Scandinavian scene is always pleasantly surprising us with new bands and artists. So until Jans Lekman gets over Swine Flu, let’s peek at a different Swedish scene; that of kraut/prog/noise rock. Alexander Palmestål and Mikael Enqvist are the Swedes behind Pistol Disco since their debut in 2007 with Radiation and follow up album Two. They have now released their latest material titled Evergreen.

Evergreen is a 40 minute voyage from pop to rock and from kraut to noise. The opening track Organ and Drums sets an accelerating pace only to be followed up by the highly addictive tune of Beat of the Tune. The next couple of tracks give way to a dreamier trip before setting the rhythm for Formula One. The album ends with a clearly noisy and liberating trip named Champagne (I’d love to learn the process behind naming tracks with no lyrics…anyone have a clue?). I never expected such a powerful album from these guys, but Evergreen is highly recommended from my part. You can order it from Celebrity Lifestyle Records or just download for free from here. I know I praise Swedish pop...but it seems the Swedes are slowly trying to prevail even over Canada’s rocks! Is it an evil plan or what?

Away we Go

This is the next movie I'll see!! Sam Mendes is back with Away we Go; a couple who is expecting their first child travel around the U.S. in order to find a perfect place to start their family. Backed up by a wonderful soundtrack from Alexi Murdoch, this looks like a perfect summer movie. I only have one doubt..should I see it at home or at an open air cinema?

PS. Thanks to Mixalis E. for posting this one at StereoNova

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
