Feck off DMCA

I've been away for a couple of days due to sickness, but it seems that was the perfect timing from DMCA's point to start sending me notices. I've received a couple in the past but never two in a row in just two days. But wait, is it simply about the music I posted? (which of' course is not even hosted by me). Is it a coincidence that both notices were about the two albums I simply said they sucked big time? Isn't it very convenient that they only complaint about my reviews regarding the hopelessly boring Mumford & Sons album and the simply ridiculous and annoying new album of Liars? Guess if you're not big enough as Pitchfork, they demand that you suck up to them. Well guess what...feck off DMCA and your fecking censorship. We'll continue to say what we think about the crappy artists you so passionately 'defend'.

Athens66 will be right Back after the Break...

It's that time of the year again to pack everything up and leave the burning pithole for a magestic island (or two). The ship is sailing tonight, so see ya all after a couple of weeks when we return from our Summer Holidays!!

Is Change a Good Thing?

As you can see, we changed Athens66's background to match our content better. The question is obvious; is change a good thing or not? We're waiting for you say on this...

Long time no see...

Back after a month's absence! Lots of work (endless hours) and 2 weeks in the U.S.Fuc**.A. and back in the pithole for me...I kind of missed everything new in the music scene but hopefully I'll catch up in the next couple of weeks (or at least I hope so). Until then...

Back from Warsaw

I've been away in Warsaw for a few days (which explains my absence) and haven't even found time to read through my favorite blogs. Hope I'm able to during the weekend. Until then (and until I find more time to post something new) I'll just dedicate Warsaw from Joy Division...simple as that!

Gaza Strip Genocide

When you thought that things couldn't get any worst in this fucked up world, along comes Israel with yet another "defensive" war. As always, the UN, EU and US stand back and enjoy the bloodbath. What else could anyone else expect..there are no oil rigs in Gaza so who cares how many innocent civilian lives are sacrificed. And I'm definitely not just blaming Israel for its short-term selective memory, since I find all western (and eastern) countries equally responsible for every murdered life in Gaza. A population of 1.5 million people trapped inside closed borders waiting each minute to be bombard, shot or slowly die from hunger and lack of medical supplies. A true genocide with the blessings of the post-war "civilized" nations.

Israel shelled Gaza Palestinians after evacuating them, UN says:
According to testimonies gathered by the UN, Israeli soldiers evacuated around 110 Palestinians to a single-storey house in Zeitoun, south-east Gaza. The evacuees were instructed to stay indoors for their own safety but 24 hours later the Israeli army shelled the house with rockets. Around half the Palestinians sheltering in the house were children, OCHA said.

UN: No Hamas Fighters in Bombed Gaza School:
United Nations investigators say they have uncovered no evidence to support a claim by the Israeli military that Hamas fighters were holed up in a Gaza school, prompting a deadly attack by Israeli forces that killed 40 civilians, many of them children.

How Israel brought Gaza to the brink of humanitarian catastrophe:
A rogue state habitually violates international law, possesses weapons of mass destruction and practises terrorism - the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. Israel fulfils all of these three criteria; the cap fits and it must wear it. Israel's real aim is not peaceful coexistence with its Palestinian neighbours but military domination.

Full Moon Athens

Most of you probably never learned about this during the holiday season but we had a full moon here in downtown Athens (although all media chose not share this with you). The moonshine was visible only in front of the central church in Athens (full coverage below).

PS. Thanks to indymedia and PoPoCulture for this.

Christmas Time

Finally it's Christmas time and we get some time (although only a couple of days) to sit back and relax (and get wasted!!). To celebrate this, here's one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs from my childhood (from the good old days of MTV)...Run D.M.C style..

Merry Christmas (I do want to fight)

The holiday spirit is finally back in Athens after the long awaiting of the new Christmas tree...All our problems have now been solved and we can get back to enjoying our prosperous life in this magical shithole city..

I Take Full Responsibility

This is the new catchphrase in Greek politics..
Taking full responsibility but not actually doing anything..

Just
do say it

So what's our answer to these hypocrites?

One word..

Working with Noir Désir

Almost falling asleep at my desk (yeap..still at work at 3:43am and counting) at least I have some music to accompany me. From my old addiction, Noir Désir's cover to John Lennon...

Welcome back...Where's my Medicine?

We're finally back from our vacation! We've actually returned a few days ago but a sore throat and a touch of fever (along with a heavy workload) haven't left much time for posting. Hopefully both will pass soon and we'll return to our usual rhythm. Until then, here's today's Clip of the Day, inspired by our sickness. It's Snoop Dogg's unusual tribute to Johnny Cash with My Medicine from his latest album (released back in March) Ego Trippin'. I'm no big fan of Snoop but this one is quite fan :-) Spread the word brother...

To hell with Athens as well...take me to the land of National

There was only one reason why we attended Fly Beyond Festival this year (a couple of days ago). Non other than one of the best bands on the planet at the moment, National!!

I have fallen in love with their last album Boxer, which was their best album so far and my favorite album of 2007 (along with Radiohead). So it was inevitable that we would head down to Karaiskaki stadium for their live performance. We finally made it on time (the stupid organizers had printed on the tickets that the festival starts at 21:00 but National came out 40 minutes earlier...total disorganization). And if this wasn't enough, they put National first, Massive Attack second (totally unimpressive live performance from them) and Gogol Borderllo last (I didn't even bother staying for them...only saw a couple of songs). All this meant that National came out on an empty stadium (only around 500 people in front of the stage) and with the sun shining well above us (unbearable heat).

Thankfully, National were unbelievable on stage, giving an amazing performance and playing many of the songs we came to love and adore during the past years. Despite the stupid crowd around me (which totally pissed me off and was ready to start a fight with a couple of them), it was the highlight of the great summer concerts I've attended this year (mostly abroad). What a pity that the music crowd in Athens is going from bad to worst (thousands stormed to see Manu Chao last week although he hasn't released anything worthwhile during the last half-decade..and totally ignored one of the top bands in the world at the pick of their career). Athens seems to deserve it's musical isolation...Hopefully they'll wake up again at some point and start appreciating good music like they have in the past.
Until then, here's an abstract from one of my favorite lyrics (and piano themes) from the incredible Slow Show. National for ever!!!

Just call me Dr. Who

On a more personal note (since this is our personal blog anyway), after many years of work, research, despair, frustration and while on the verge of giving up...finally I presented my PhD and can now reference myself as Dr. Who or simply The Doctor! If only I had such cool hair...(this one is dedicated to myself...how arrogant!)

PS. Actually it was suggested by BLR to make this the Tune of the Day

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
