So long our friend...Farewell to Jay Reatard!

I was right about to make a review of the new album from Vampire Weekend, when I stubbled upon the breaking news. Our beloved punker Jay Reatard (Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr.) died in his sleep at around 3:30 a.m yesterday (Jan. 13) in his home at Memphis. I simply couldn't believe it. I personally loved his punchy punk tunes and free spirit. We even saw him live 2 years ago in Roskilde, where he rocked (at least for a couple of songs before he jumped into the crowd!). Beck and the Pixies where from the first to offer their condolences to his family.

Jay was only 29...

Mika Miko forever (...or not)

Sad news as it seems...The Californian punkers Mika Miko are calling it a day according to the Los Angeles Times (confirmed by their record label). The root of the problem seems to be "returns to school, new projects, jobs and relationships". Sounds like these youth are giving up simply because they are growing up. A real pitty...

A few hours ago, one of our favorite blogs and sources of indie music has been closed down by Google. The Passion of Indie Music is no longer available. Hope all this bullshit with Blogspot and Google are sorted out quickly, cause we are really missing out on one of our most valuable sources. Respect to IndiePassion!!

The King is Dead

"NEW YORK, NY – June 25, 2009 – Michael Jackson, one of the most widely beloved entertainers and profoundly influential artists of all-time, leaves an indelible imprint on popular music and culture." This is the opening statement from Sony posted on the official page of Michael Jackson. According to media sources. he was pronounced dead today at 2.26pm local L.A. time due to heart failure at the age of 50.

Michael may have turned out to be one of the wierdest artists of all time with numerous allegations and rumours regarding his skin and his "affection" for children, but all this aside, he still remained the King of Pop and ruled the 80's with his all-time record selling albums Thriller and Bad. Nomatter what your taste in music, you just have to repsect Michael's achievements. For those that only see a multi-talented artist gone rotten, we simply prefer to remember Michael as the King of Pop. Farewell to the King!

PS. This is the 18-minute short-film/video of Bad written by novelist and screenwriter Richard Price and directed by Martin Scorsese. This was the golden age for music videos and MTV...

Gaza Strip Genocide

When you thought that things couldn't get any worst in this fucked up world, along comes Israel with yet another "defensive" war. As always, the UN, EU and US stand back and enjoy the bloodbath. What else could anyone else expect..there are no oil rigs in Gaza so who cares how many innocent civilian lives are sacrificed. And I'm definitely not just blaming Israel for its short-term selective memory, since I find all western (and eastern) countries equally responsible for every murdered life in Gaza. A population of 1.5 million people trapped inside closed borders waiting each minute to be bombard, shot or slowly die from hunger and lack of medical supplies. A true genocide with the blessings of the post-war "civilized" nations.

Israel shelled Gaza Palestinians after evacuating them, UN says:
According to testimonies gathered by the UN, Israeli soldiers evacuated around 110 Palestinians to a single-storey house in Zeitoun, south-east Gaza. The evacuees were instructed to stay indoors for their own safety but 24 hours later the Israeli army shelled the house with rockets. Around half the Palestinians sheltering in the house were children, OCHA said.

UN: No Hamas Fighters in Bombed Gaza School:
United Nations investigators say they have uncovered no evidence to support a claim by the Israeli military that Hamas fighters were holed up in a Gaza school, prompting a deadly attack by Israeli forces that killed 40 civilians, many of them children.

How Israel brought Gaza to the brink of humanitarian catastrophe:
A rogue state habitually violates international law, possesses weapons of mass destruction and practises terrorism - the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. Israel fulfils all of these three criteria; the cap fits and it must wear it. Israel's real aim is not peaceful coexistence with its Palestinian neighbours but military domination.

Sunday night out with Monika

If you got no plans for tonight (and live in Athens) then I guess the best idea is a trip downtown to Bar Guru Bar around 22:00 where Monika is playing (free entrance courtesy of City 99,5 radio). Hope I'll make it and actually fit upstairs (since the bar ain't that big).

The Safest Bet

A big thumbs up to Βλαχοκυριλές for his recent prank on Greek media. A photoshoped bet on Betfair regarding the burn-down of the new Christmas Tree during the holiday season. Of' course, even the big media channels such as Skai and Ant-1 replicated the news without even noticing that it was a joke. Hands-on proof of the quality of journalism in Greek media. Well done mate!!

Full Moon Athens

Most of you probably never learned about this during the holiday season but we had a full moon here in downtown Athens (although all media chose not share this with you). The moonshine was visible only in front of the central church in Athens (full coverage below).

PS. Thanks to indymedia and PoPoCulture for this.

I Take Full Responsibility

This is the new catchphrase in Greek politics..
Taking full responsibility but not actually doing anything..

Just
do say it

So what's our answer to these hypocrites?

One word..

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
