It's that time of the year again to pack everything up and leave the burning pithole for a magestic island (or two). The ship is sailing tonight, so see ya all after a couple of weeks when we return from our Summer Holidays!!

Off to Hardcore beach

Once again..we are off to find the Hardcore beach!!! See you all when we get back and promise for more consistent posting...or at least an effort to finally find some new music worth our time.

Long time no see...

Back after a month's absence! Lots of work (endless hours) and 2 weeks in the U.S.Fuc**.A. and back in the pithole for me...I kind of missed everything new in the music scene but hopefully I'll catch up in the next couple of weeks (or at least I hope so). Until then...

Back from Warsaw

I've been away in Warsaw for a few days (which explains my absence) and haven't even found time to read through my favorite blogs. Hope I'm able to during the weekend. Until then (and until I find more time to post something new) I'll just dedicate Warsaw from Joy Division...simple as that!

Getting away with it (all the way to Patmos)

Athens66 is finally leaving today for their summer vacation. However, we'll only be missing for one week, so I guess no one will notice. So where off to this time? Patmos is the place, where BLR and the rest of the gang is already there for a couple of days now and I'm personally heading to join them tonight. So, until we return, have a great summertime and see (or hear) from all of you (yes those known 10-15 people) in a week! Ciao everyone, we are all getting away with it!!!

Roskilde - Day 3 - Live: Judas Priest, Notwist, My Bloody Valentine, Neil Young, Lykke Li, Girl Talk, The Raveonettes, The Chemical Brother, No Age

Rise and shine, for the wake of the third day at Roskilde (Saturday). With the sun shining well above us, we decided to skip the morning shows (The Ting Tings, Jose Gonzalez, Tokyo Police Club and Joan as Police Woman) and head for a morning trip to Denmark’s capital Copenhagen.
The trip took almost an hour (thanks to the great delays at the Danish train network) and we finally made it downtown. To be honest, I wasn’t impressed by the city since it was crowded with elderly tourists. But since we only stayed for a few hours I won’t let my skepticism take over and will just stick to saying that it was another typical European capital.
So, back to the music since this was the main reason of our trip. Our festival day started off with old rockers Judas Priest giving a less than impressive afternoon performance at the Orange Stage. It was fun to see the old guys on stage, but only for a couple of songs (never been too much of a fan anyway). So we quickly moved over to the Astoria stage for our German friends, The Notwist. Their latest album was really good so our expectations were quite high. Unfortunately, a lousy sound system and the ridiculously suffocating and hot atmosphere of the Astoria stage let us down. The band (as their songs) is a bit on the down-tempo style, which isn’t fitted to live performances. Although they also played all-time classics such as Pick up the Phone, they never managed to get the crowd going. What a pity..
So we decided to switch stage and paid a visit to the Arena for My Bloody Valentine. The Irish rockers were the exact opposite of Notwist. Loud as hell, energetic and simply kicked ass. Who cares that we couldn’t understand a word of what they were singing, the pure punches of guitar, bass and drums were more than enough for us. Some bands are just made for playing live..

Up next, on the Orange stage, it was time for a real history lesson courtesy of one of the greatest rockers of all time, Neil Young. I have no idea how old Neil is nowadays but he sure still knows how to rock. On stage, Neil was singing, jamming on the guitar and giving a powerful performance that many young artists would envy. And all this for almost two hours in a row (we did leave at half-point to catch some other acts but he was still up on stage when we got back after an hour or so).
Our next stop was at the Odeon stage, for Swedish phenomenon Lykke Li. The audience was once again mostly youngsters (a bit better than the teen crowd of Kate Nash), so while Lykke was giving a reasonable performance we only stayed for a few tracks (the atmosphere wasn’t suited for us…damn we are too old).
Coming up was the party of the festival, Girl Talk on the Cosmopol stage. I knew that Girl Talk is famous for setting the party on fire and this was confirmed in this case as well. Thousands of people under the same tent dancing and hoping around with every beat Girl Talk was throwing at us. Accompanied by crazy dancers on stage and bombarded by an awesome light show, this was one great show that even made me bounce around!!
After so much action, we needed to slow down so we decided to skip Liars and head over to the Arena for locals Raveonettes. Unfortunately, way too many others had the same idea so we were miles away from the stage and could only barely see the band itself. The crowd seemed to love them, but I guess that was mostly because this is their home country. To me, they were merely ok. But perhaps that was just me..
We then moved once again to the center (Orange) stage for one of the festival’s headliners, The Chemical Brothers. This is the first time I see them live, although not at their peak of their career anymore (many doubted the choice of having them as headliners). They guys give a great powerful multimedia show, but that’s exactly what it is. Two guys in front of two computers (which 95% of the crowd couldn’t see at all) and hundreds of lights, TV screens and video projectors supporting them. I agree that it was an impressive show, but to me (and most people out there) it wouldn’t make any difference if the electronic duo was actually on stage or not (the show wouldn’t be any different at all).
It was then time for the last act of the day, one that I anticipated quite a lot since their last album was one of my favorite entries for this year. Part of the new lo-fi punk scene, it was time for No Age. The crowd at the Pavilion stage was mostly made up of skateboard-like teenagers (guess this is the punk audience these days) and counted in dozens (I guess most people decided not too leave the Chemical Brothers’ light show). The LA duo is really powerful on stage, but unfortunately (for me) they cut all songs down to merely 2-minutes and left most of the improvising and experimental jams out. I guess this was mostly due to their audience (the youth were there just for the punk element). Nevertheless, I enjoyed it quite a lot, especially since they ended the set with my favorite Ripped Knees.

So that was it for the third day. We had one more day to go and although Saturday never reached the high energy of the second day, it was still quite interesting. Here’s some footage from most of the acts we saw (in the usual poor quality).

Deep Down and Dirty

Yeap, we are finally coming back after 4 days of live music, non-stop alcohol and tons of dirt (we thought Southside was dirty last year but Roskilde is just on another level of madness..an endless field of dirt, dust and piss). It was great fun (we'll post much more about the music itself once we get back home) but for now I'm just looking forward to a warm bath and a soft bed (still on the airport waiting for the flight)..More later on..

Roskilde here we come!!!

The Athens66 team is now departing for Roskilde!! Finally the time has come to hit the north and enjoy some live music and lots and lots of alcohol. The lineup this year may not have many classic headliners but hopefully the new bands will make the whole trip worthwhile. We'll be back with extended reports and many pictures. Until then, take a peek of some of the acts we are going to see on stage through Roskilde's Last.Fm playlist. Here we go...

Tony Gatlif sets the Trance (Exils)

Today we are posting something totally different for this blog. It was yet another day on the beach for us, giving us time to hear some more music on the way. So we gave Monika and The Old 97's a couple of spins before switching to something from the past. The clip (and music) below is from Tony Gatlif's 2004 movie Exils. I saw the movie that year (I think during the Athens film festival) and really loved it. It is about the journey of a couple from Paris to their roots all the way to Algeria (obviously an autobiographical journey of the director). Gatlif is perhaps better known for Gadjo Dilo and especially Latcho Drom. Check him out; he is one of my favorite directors. and his movies are filled with music (ethnic of 'course). The same goes for the soundtrack of Exils, with tracks like this combined with oozes of flamengo. So now it's your turn to get into the trance...

A Thereminist from the Past (Dorit Chrysler)

And while I was looking at Cruel Black Dove's video in YouTube, I was immediately led to the next clip (by YouTube's automatic video recommendation system..or just by plain luck) to Dorit Chrysler's Sustain me. Dorit comes from Austria although she has moved to New York for quite some years now. The interesting thing about Dorit is that she combines her unique voice with her favorite music instrument, the theremin. Portishead meets Julee Cruise meets David Lynch meets the Theremin. Strange yet magical combination. The even more interesting fact is that I accidentally show her live in Berlin around 5 or 6 years ago when I was touring the city for a week and saw her live act in a local newspaper and of'course decided to check her out. Strange coincident? If you hear her music you'll see that it all makes sense..

Fuck Buttons all along (Street Horsssing coming home)

I guess my previous post is not so much in the spirit of Athens66 (musically). So I decided to create a tape of what I was really listening to during my trip these past few days. Not much actually, since I spent most of my time with past favorite like Okay and Shearwater. But I also decided to give Fuck Buttons a go after the great reviews I read about their live act in Primavera festival.

Their debut album (released back in March this year) Street Horrrsing is what I would call electronoise. They are producing progressive/experimental electronic music that is damn addicted. I loved it so much that I decided to create a mixtape (just a plain tape actually since there is no mix here) of their album. Recommended by many (including us)...Enjoy...

Athens66 is now heading for Koufonisia!!!

The Athens66 team is now heading for Koufonisia for a few days. After hard work and intense posting, we decided we deserve a few days off. For those wondering (all non-Greeks that is), Koufonisia are these small islands,

and the team will be enjoying most of the time in one of the islands' coasts, which look something like this,

while moving around in something like this.

And if you still have no clue where this small heaven is, here's a googlemap view.

I know most of you won't notice our absence but for those (few) that do, we'll try to make it up by coming back with freshly tanned ideas! Until then, take care while we enjoy the sun and live the life..

PS. Here's a mixtape for you to enjoy until we get back (it's not mine..had no time to prepare one so I just post one that I found and was quite fan!)

MoreThoughts from Abroad

After a hard day full of meetings and discussions (which continues today), I was able yesterday to enjoy another tradition here in San Sebastian, pinxtos. This is similar to the famous Spanish tapas, but the Basque version (which usually means more food on top of the bread). The real treat is not the food itself, but the whole experience that accompanies it. The proper way to eat pinxtos is something similar to bar hopping. At the start of the evening, one person collects all the money from the group and is responsible for paying for everything. You then charge into the different pinxto bars and enjoy a drink (usually beer or wine) and a pinxto (from a real treat of choices that are laying on the bar and you can just pickup without asking…everything is summed up at the end). Once finished, it’s time for the next one. The night ends when you run out of money (which is usually after 5 or 6 bars) or probably if you are unable to drink anymore. Another great fun idea that has not caught up in any other country…

PS. I found the picture of this pinxto bar from Google but I’m pretty sure it was either the 2nd or 3rd one we visited..

Thoughts from Abroad (who cares?)

As fellow blogger BLR commented, I’m once again back in the Basque country. After my previous visit to Bilbao, this time I’m at rainy, yet still beautiful, San Sebastian. Unfortunately I’ve had some problems with the wireless back in my hotel so I was unable to publish any of my planned posts yesterday.
I did have the joy though of touring around the city (especially the seafront) and also visiting a near-by village named Getaria, where some of my Basque colleagues had prepared a perfect dinner at their local Txokos. Txokos is a local tradition here in the Basque country; a sort of gastronomic society (once exclusively for men) where professional facilities (kitchen, barbeque, dinning tables) are available and you bring your own stuff and cook with friends. Booze and cleaning up is provided by the society, so you actually have the chance of enjoying cooking and eating without the added burdens. A perfect idea, which unfortunately hasn’t caught up in other places. Nevertheless, a great break from my typical meetings and social events abroad. It’s back to posts and work now…

Back on the Telly

Besides sightseeing and endless (probably crappy though) photographs that I've taken during this trip, the other thing that really stands out is getting back in grips with british television. It was quite a flashback when (while zapping through the limited channels during one of my resting times back in the hotel) I show the opening title (and haunting music) of Eastenders. Some things I guess never change back here.
This isn't always bad though. Cause I got another (enjoyable this time) flashback when I saw O'Sullivan and Hendry battling it out at the Crucible. To be honest, it was no battle this time with pure genius O'Sullivan just cruising through to the final (he's already managed to produce a 147 maximum during the tournament).
Amongst the other things spotted on the telly, a number of lame british comedies and dramas (whose names thankfully I don't recall), the local elections (with Labour facing a big loss and Boris ruling over London), Graham Norton still doing his show and Anne Robinson still torturing players at the Weakest Link.
At least I got to finally see an episode of The Big Bang Theory (although American; another harmless comedy about geeks and chicks which I'll probably download since I've finished How I Met Your Mother) and also Balls of Steel from C4 (great comedy show with nuts people trying to impress the host with how far and how stupid they can be to make people laugh; definitely going on my download list).
PS. Going digital and subscribing to private telly has always been the only choice (well subscribing not digital) to watching telly in the UK. Thank god for internet and torrents!!

Back on the Island

I've been spending the last week back on the Island (UK) cause of work. I've spent 4 days in Glasgow and now I'm in Edinburgh for another couple of nights before heading back to Athens. I've never been up so north before and must say I don't regret it that much. It's not that there's anything too bad or appalling about the place; on the contrary. Perhaps it's not the place itself but rather me (what a cliche).
While Glasgow was a bit dull as a city, its nightlife and music scene is packed with bars, pubs and live music in numerous corners. On the other hand, the natural and architectural beauty that Glasgow is missing is more than compensated here at Edinburgh. It is the night life however that did not inspire me for more than a couple of Guinness. It was basically down to choosing between the classy, fancy and definitely posy high class bars and clubs of George Street or the usual "I'm totally pissed, underage or just woke up from the nearby hostel" bars of Cowgate and Lothian.
Of the two cities, I definitely choose Glasgow head over heels (even just out of respect for giving us bands such as Belle & Sebastian, Arab Strap, Teenage Fanclub, Sons and Daughter, Franz Ferdinand and so many more).

PS. I'm sure both cities have so much more to offer than I just (very) briefly saw (you never really know a city until you lived it as an insider). It's mostly that I've always hated the classic pissed-and-jerk style of the brits (although it has its benefits). Give me a proper bar with real drinks and music, that's all I need..

Down at Sauchiehall Street

Following Gavin Dunbar's indie guide to Glasgow, I ended up yesterday at Sauchiehall Street where (after all the shops) most of the bars are located (well at least a lot of the bars). The street is packed with a mix of classic pubs and rock bars (where you can find a lot of new bands playing from early afternoon). As a tribute (to Gavin and Glasgow bands in general) today's Tune of the Day is Camera Obscura's If Looks Could Kill. If only they could...

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
