Athens66 @ Poplie Radio - Take Eleven

This was the last show of the year for Athens66 on Poplie Radio. The bad news is, next year's show is only a week away :-) Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did (probably due to the alcohol) and see you all next Sunday from 20.00 till 22.00 here. [download link of the show below]

Happy New Year to everyone!

Fresh Saturday Videos

Fresh videos for you today. First off, an amazingly funny Avett Brothers songs titled Slight Figure Of Speech. I just loved this video so much.

And the new clip from the new Vampire Weekend song titled Cousins, from their upcoming (and highly anticipated) album Contra. Yeap...another non-sense song from Vampire but we love it anyway.

Athens66 @ Poplie Radio - Take Seven

Museum of Bellas Artes are questioning Who Do You Love

Museum of Bellas Artes are a trio from Stockholm that play the usual Swedish mellow pop. They did a cover of Who do you Love by Sapphires (track originally released back in 1964) last year and now they got a brand new video and remix to go with it. Check both out...they are simply so Swedish!

Athens66 @ Poplie Radio - Take Six

Another show on Poplie Radio is now history. Last night we had a special extended 4-hour show and managed to include dozens of new artists (mostly from L.A. this time). The funny thing is, we actually run out of time in the end (still had 5-6 more tracks we wanted to air). Guess we need to seriously consider adding another timeslot during the week (for our 5 dedicated fans!). Until then, stay tuned here and see ya next time! Robert Church and The Holy Commmunity and their Los Tres De Canarias

Robert Chuch & The Holy Community are a lo fi pop band from Sweden (typical). They are now releasing a cassete-only album (titled Los Tres De Canarias) from a small label in Michigan (Fox Pop). They are a mix of Casiotone and Swedish pop, so of'course we couldn't resist posting it. Good stuff for starting off the weekend!

Mika Miko forever (...or not)

Sad news as it seems...The Californian punkers Mika Miko are calling it a day according to the Los Angeles Times (confirmed by their record label). The root of the problem seems to be "returns to school, new projects, jobs and relationships". Sounds like these youth are giving up simply because they are growing up. A real pitty...

Take Away some Athens Soundies

Belated as ever, I just found this site which is inspired by the Take Away Shows series of LaBlogotheque. It is called Athens Soundies [hey hey...copyright issues? :-)] and features lo-fi videos from indie bands. It is pretty cool so check it out. I've chosen two videos for you, one from the amazing Warpaint and another from Acrylics. Enjoy!

Music Blast on Athens66

This is a new post series, obviously called Music Blast. Every now and then, we will post some free songs for you from various new and upcoming bands. Hopefully some of them will shine through!

The Idyllists and their Long Hours Between Sunset and Morning

This is another of those bands that we are lucky to be contacted by. The Idyllists are from Los Angeles (seems like we host a lot of California bands these days...perhaps we are influenced by Californication?) although they sound much more british (in a good way). Their influences are definetly britpop with high resemblance to the Smiths. Beautiful happy tunes and melodies with pure pop elements and straightforward tunes that really stay with you. I'm suprised how these guys haven't made it big yet...but guess you never know when this will change (hopefully soon). Enjoy!

500 Days of Summer

So I finally saw this one (been looking for the movie for months). To be honest I expected it a bit better but nevertheless I enjoyed it. Cool music, Zooey Deschanel and romance with a twist..what else do you need for a light comedy? Of'course the ending may put some people off (you've been warned) but the music and the close ups of Zooey were pretty much enough for me.

Sambassadeur are back these Days

One of our favorite Swedish (what else) bands is almost ready to release a new album. Sambassadeur are back on the studio and have almost finished recording their tracks, which are due in January on Labrador (again what else) label. Until then, enjoy their new (and free) track Days!

Athens66 @ Poplie Radio - Take Five

Our show last night (Sunday) as usual from 20.00 till 22.00 on Poplie Radio was one of our best so far. The music was far better than we expected and the crowd (all 5 of them) was more than pleased. What a shame so many people missed the Beyoncé concert and stayed home just for our show. It was sure worth it though. See you all on our next live session! New clip from Swedish duo Titiyo & Moto Boy. The song is titled If Only Your Bed Could Cry and is from their upcoming album Hidden (in 2010). A bit of Antony resemblance here but that's ok...

Tap Tap are On My Way

On My Way is the second album by Thomas Trustfund's band Tap Tap (the lead singer of Pete and the Pirates). His debut Lanzafame was released back in 2003 and was considered a real gem that went unnoticed by most people. His new work was released on Stolen Records label at the end of Septemeber and once again contains really solid material. Happy, light pop that makes you smile and relax in the midst of autumn. We included them on our previous playlist on poplie radio and they were sure worth it. Enjoy!

Athens66 @ Poplie Radio - Take Four

Yet another Sunday show from 20.00 till 22.00 on Poplie Radio has gone by. Lot's of technical problems this week, but in the end the show was better than we expected, including some new tunes from Yeasayer, Tap Tap and lots of Seattle bands like Telekinesis, Say Hi and The Cave Singers. Of'course, the highlight of the show was the new Cobra Killer album!! As alway, you can download our show below. See you all on our next live session!

Yeasayer finally offer Ambling Alp

So what if the Big-3 (Pitchfork, Stereogum, Melophobe) have already posted this. The real deal is that Yeasayer have finally released a new single. It's call Ambling Alp and is offered for free. Their full follow-up album Odd Blood is expected February 19 on our beloved Secretly Canadian (belated birthday present?). We've also featured this (along with a number of other mp3s) on our Tunes of the Week section on the right (since this feature is quite new). Enjoy!

Cobra Killer bring Uppers and Downers

Gina and Annika, the crazy german electroclash duo, are back after 4 years of absense. Their new material is titled Uppers & Downers and contains the usual madness we came to expect from these girls. Some songs are simply awful, some are simply amazing...true Cobra Killer style. The only difference I can spot is the pair of elf ears they seem to have grown (have no clue why)! Anyway, we stil love them as always. Enjoy only if accompanied by lots and lots of alcohol!

Winter Gloves are all About a Girl

How on earth did we miss this one? Our fellow blogger Zeugolator did warn us last year but we somehow still managed to oversee it. Winter Gloves are an indie band from Montreal that make incredible indie songs. Their debut About a Girl was released last year and should have been on our top list...but I guess it's never to late. Their track Invisible is just playing endlessly for the last couple of days and the rest of the album is equally briliant. Don't miss it (like we did)!

Athens66 @ Poplie Radio - Take Three

As always, we had our 2 hour session yesterday from 20.00 till 22.00 on Poplie Radio. This week's tunes started off dirty, slowly lightened-up and ended in our usual mellow way (the fine bottle of Metaxa that BLR brought might had something to do with this!). Hopefully next time you'll hear us live we'll have a new mic, since it seems to be getting worst and worst. Nevertheless, feel free to download yesterday's show from the link below and comment on our choices. Enjoy and see ya next week!

Let it Beep the Royal Bangs

Royal Bangs are a indie rock band from Tennessee. They released their debut titled We Breed Champions last year and they are now back with new material. Their new release is called Let it Beep and was released on September 15th in the US on Audio Eagle and is currently released in Europe under City Slang label. Their sound is quite interesting, offering a mix of classic indie guitars with a bit more contemporary electro tweaks and a sence of grunge. I accidently had this one in my playlist yesterday and immediately caught my attention. Their music sounds so pure and exciting, it's really a pleasure to hear this album from end to end. Check it out!

Are they simply Amazing?

Christoffer Gunrup, Reine Fiske, Johan Holmegard and Fredrik Swahn are simply The Amazing. This is a new band from (guess where) Sweden that is slowly making a name for themselves. Their single Dragon was recently featured/reviewed in Pitchfork and they are currently touring the US (they are playing Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow in Brooklyn...which is our new header pic btw!). Their music is a mix of pop-rock folk and prog-rock with a few elements of psychedelia. They are probably following the US trend set by Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend and Yeasayer (amongst others). Nevertheless, they do make beautiful songs and they are Swedes, so they are more than worth a listen. Their self-titled debut album was released in iTunes and Sweden back in April but is available worldwide now on Subliminal Sounds label. Enjoy!

Magnolia Electric Co are back with Josephine

This is yet another of those bands that we've come across from time to time but never really paid enough attention in order to recall later on. Jason Molina is the man behind this act and has already realeased a dozen (or more) records under the name Songs:Ohia before recording his last LP titled Magnolia Electric Co. This signaled the stage name change to Magnolia Electric Co along with a few more albums, until we reach this year's latest release titled Josephine. Jason's music is sweet lo-fi folk with elements of alt-country that bring obvious comparisons to the master Will Oldham. Then again, I'm no exepert on this genre but I surely enjoyed this album for a change of pace from my usual pop/rock sounds. Beautiful melodies, a sence of darkness and a deep, trembling voice is enough to ensure you'll be quickly lured into it as well. It's nice to re-discover some artists afterall!

Phantogram and their Eyelid Movies

Phantogram are an electronic duo from Saratoga Springs, NY. Their music ranges from electronic to experimental and from pop to shoegaze. Josh and Shara take turns on the vocals and so does the tempo, from slow ambient vibes to full drumming beats or mellow soul vibes. Their debut LP Eyelid Movies has just been released on BBE label and is worth more than a couple of spins. We've already included them in our weekly radio show...and will probably do again!

God Help the Girl Playlist

It took me quite a while to discover this one...eventhough it's been posted everywhere for quite some months now (I somehow missed it). God Help the Girl is a musical film by Stuart Murdoch (Belle & Sebastian) that will be shot in 2010 and will feature mostly new songs plus two old Belle tracks. The difference here are the all female vocals in most tracks, which give another twist to the Belle sound we came to love. To be honest, nothing can be compared to Stuart's voice...but nevertheless the soundtrack is amazing and we are highly anticipating the film. Until then, here's a playlist of all four behind-the-scenes documentary clips that Stuart has made available.

How about some Sweet 'Swedish' Serenades?

There seems to be no stopping the Swedish music factory this days. Thank god for that if you ask me. The Sweet Serenades is yet another pop-rock indie duo from Stockholm. They release their First Taste EP back in 2007 and are now back with their debut album titled Balcony Cigarettes. A Crop Rotation from Polynya

We usually get flooded by junk mail in our contact address here in Athens66 and it takes hour to sort the crap. However, there are times that all this sorting pays off. A mail from Polynya back in early August was such a case. I've received their second album via mail when I got back from holiday and I must say I was quite impressed. Crop Rotation is a mix of of pop, indie and shoegaze that really hits the right spots sometimes (although not quite always). It's nevertheless worth more than a few spins!

We've Missed Those Dancing Days

The Downside of not living in Reykjavik

We may have had our night out here in Athens but up north in Reykjavik there was another free-entrance party. Gus Gus played an album releace concert at Nikita Garden for their latest album titled 24/7.

Their first single is also out titled Add this Song. The album is a bit too techno-dance for me but the full version of this song isn't half bad (although not even close to their old tracks).

And speaking of old tracks, here's an amazing live performance from back in time and their song Believe. Those were the Gus Gus that we came to love (when they were still counted 9). Thanks to gsus for posting this one!

Old and New Sessions

This is why I still love Sons and Daughters! Taken of'course from an oldie Blogotheque (In a Van Sessions). We saw Vincent Moon last night downtown in Booze. Fucking Google...but who cares anymore...I've got my Papillon

So they removed my video from Youtube and deleted my post...but what the heck...here's the official one (although it's been aired a couple of weeks now).

PS. It's insteresting how many more songs are titled Papillon. Take for example The Airborne Toxic Event (which is quite known actually).

A few hours ago, one of our favorite blogs and sources of indie music has been closed down by Google. The Passion of Indie Music is no longer available. Hope all this bullshit with Blogspot and Google are sorted out quickly, cause we are really missing out on one of our most valuable sources. Respect to IndiePassion!!

Fuck Buttons are Fucking Back!!

Yeap...it's true. The dynamic electro duo from Bristol that simply suprised everyone last year with their debut Street Horrrsing is finally back. Last year they offered as their pure experimental - electro meets noise - sound. This year they are back with their follow-up titled Tarot Sport (out in October on ATP/R label as always).

The new album will certainly be more accessible to more people out there since it tends to be more on the electro side rather than the noise side. Nevertheless, it still offers Fuck Button's unique signature of edgy patterns and endless loops. I'll be honest, I just loved their new material but then again I also loved their debut album, so I ain't totally unbiased. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it to everyone with just one small tip. Play it fucking loud!!!

Pete and Scarlett are ready to Break Up

It seems that Scarlett's debut last year at the music scene with Tom Waits' tribute album Anywhere I Lay my Head wasn't as successful as she hoped it to be (although it wasn't a disappointment either). Therefore she decided to follow Zooey Deschanel's footsteps and collaborate with pop singer/songwriter Pete Yorn. Their album is titled Break Up and is coming out on September 8th on Atco/Rhino label. After a quick listen I found the album much better than I expected. A mix of pop and folk (following She & Him's successful style) that suites both their voices. However, as opposed to She & Him, Pete is the dominant figure in this duo with Scarlett coming off mostly as a backup voice (with few exceptions like Relator). Then again, Scarlett's voice ain't so vivid and clear as Zooey's, so the choice was more than wise. Nevertheless, we would more than love to see a Zooey - Scarlett music faceoff! But since this seems a bit too far off (at least for reality), we'll just have to stick to what we have. So enjoy Pete's and Scarlett's first single Relator!

Calvin Harris may be Ready for the Weekend but we ain't!

Scottish electro-wiz Calvin Harris released his debut I Created Disco back in 2007 and instantly made a name for himself. I actually really liked his debut with all the retro sounds and was looking forward to his follow-up. That is until I gave his latest release Ready for the Weekend a listen. This is probably one of the worst albums I've heard in years. Cheesy 80's synths with uninspiring beats, ridiculous 'We get a thrill from clapping our hands, we find the nearest girl and ask her to dance' lyrics and an overall feeling of replicating the worst of the 80's and 90's dance anthems (the ones you know you are too embarrassed to admit you danced to back then). Nope...first time around 2 years ago it was fun, now it's simply lame and boring (if not totally ridiculous). I'll pass big time!

Noah and the Whale last more than The First Days of Spring

Noah and the Whale are one of those bands that have nearly everything spot on for me. First off, their name is a tribute to Noah Baumbach and his film The Squid and the Whale. Then they quite often sign their posts as 'Sic Transit Gloria' (phrase from Wes Anderson's Rushmore). Even their music style (a pop-folk mix) brings memories of Belle & Sebastian or the Magic Numbers. What else do you need to make this band an instant favorite? Well, perhaps some really amazing music and a stunning new album!

The First Days of Spring (coming out September 1st on Mercury label) is simply my favorite summer album. I've listened to it endless times during the last couple of weeks while on holiday and I came to love it. After their debut last year (Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down) Noah have come back with a hurt soul and a musical jewel. Both female singers have left the band since their debut with Laura Marling leaving front-man Charlie Fink with a broken heart. This more than obviously inspires him throughout the album and probably throughout the forthcoming film that will accompany it. Beautiful melodies, great orchestrations and a dreamy journey from these Londoners that is simply perfect. Enjoy!

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
