The Architect

It's been a while since my last tune posted, so here is today's pick. As always, I came upon this by luck while switching channels at my hotel (in Rome this time). It's the second single from dEUS ' upcoming new album and while I'm no fan of the group, the single is quite a catchy tune. Is it about Ted from HIMYM? (don't think so)

By the way, It's been also quite some time since my last album review. I've been trying to sit down and write some small posts about a number of albums I've listened to during these past weeks but always seem to find a reason to postpone them. Hopefully I'll be able to during the following days. Although I must admit that I've been listening to too many indie bands to be able to write an unbiased review...they all start to sound alike after a while :-)

Problem Fixed

I found this funny strip at some blog and it actually reflects how I feel these days about problems and means to fix them. We all come across things that annoy us each day and sometimes the only way of fixing them is to stop thinking and start acting.

The Rocket is back on top

Ronnie “The Rocket” O'Sullivan claimed his third world title yesterday at the Crucible by winning Ali Carter 18-8. The 32-year-old snooker genius wasn’t pleased with his performance (managed to score only one century as opposed to five in the semi-final against Steven Hendry and also his opening game’s 147 maximum). This win also brought him once again at the top of the world ranking.
Ronnie is the record holder on number of maximums achieved (9) and is also responsible for the 5 fastest maximums (justifying his nickname “The Rocket”). As a tribute to the Rocket, here’s his first maximum from all the way back in 1997, which also happens to be the fastest one ever achieved (in just 5 minutes and 20 seconds).

Unmistakeably Stupid

Amongst the other crap on the telly, I also spotted this Citroen C5 commercial (which will probably be playing back home as well). One thing only comes to mind, who the hell paid for such an ad? This is by far one of the worst commercials I've seen in a long time (how desperate are Citroen to beg people to see them as Germans?)

Back on the Telly

Besides sightseeing and endless (probably crappy though) photographs that I've taken during this trip, the other thing that really stands out is getting back in grips with british television. It was quite a flashback when (while zapping through the limited channels during one of my resting times back in the hotel) I show the opening title (and haunting music) of Eastenders. Some things I guess never change back here.

This isn't always bad though. Cause I got another (enjoyable this time) flashback when I saw O'Sullivan and Hendry battling it out at the Crucible. To be honest, it was no battle this time with pure genius O'Sullivan just cruising through to the final (he's already managed to produce a 147 maximum during the tournament).

Amongst the other things spotted on the telly, a number of lame british comedies and dramas (whose names thankfully I don't recall), the local elections (with Labour facing a big loss and Boris ruling over London), Graham Norton still doing his show and Anne Robinson still torturing players at the Weakest Link.
At least I got to finally see an episode of The Big Bang Theory (although American; another harmless comedy about geeks and chicks which I'll probably download since I've finished How I Met Your Mother) and also Balls of Steel from C4 (great comedy show with nuts people trying to impress the host with how far and how stupid they can be to make people laugh; definitely going on my download list).

PS. Going digital and subscribing to private telly has always been the only choice (well subscribing not digital) to watching telly in the UK. Thank god for internet and torrents!!

Back on the Island

I've been spending the last week back on the Island (UK) cause of work. I've spent 4 days in Glasgow and now I'm in Edinburgh for another couple of nights before heading back to Athens. I've never been up so north before and must say I don't regret it that much. It's not that there's anything too bad or appalling about the place; on the contrary. Perhaps it's not the place itself but rather me (what a cliche).
While Glasgow was a bit dull as a city, its nightlife and music scene is packed with bars, pubs and live music in numerous corners. On the other hand, the natural and architectural beauty that Glasgow is missing is more than compensated here at Edinburgh. It is the night life however that did not inspire me for more than a couple of Guinness. It was basically down to choosing between the classy, fancy and definitely posy high class bars and clubs of George Street or the usual "I'm totally pissed, underage or just woke up from the nearby hostel" bars of Cowgate and Lothian.
Of the two cities, I definitely choose Glasgow head over heels (even just out of respect for giving us bands such as Belle & Sebastian, Arab Strap, Teenage Fanclub, Sons and Daughter, Franz Ferdinand and so many more).

PS. I'm sure both cities have so much more to offer than I just (very) briefly saw (you never really know a city until you lived it as an insider). It's mostly that I've always hated the classic pissed-and-jerk style of the brits (although it has its benefits). Give me a proper bar with real drinks and music, that's all I need..

Bayern des samma mia

We kind of expected it but not at this extend. Bayern has managed to equal their worst losing score ever (4-0) against Zenit yesterday. The Germans were a true disappointment and with them gone so have our last chances of watching the UEFA final (who actually cares whether Zenit or Rangers win it?). They truly deserve the following fake video (not as fake as their performance)

Send them all home Drogba

After a disappointing win from Manchester two days ago (damn you Ferguson) it came down to Drogba to save us from a miserable final. Let us just hope he can produce another appearance like yesterday's and send yet another set of Reds back home. Nevertheless, my focus this year is set at the UEFA cup (due to our beloved Germans) and not the Champions League. I'm hoping for an away win from Bayern (although due to being in Glasgow these days I'll probably watch the Rangers match in some local pub instead).

PS. I just noticed that we (Panathinaikos) demolished AEK yesterday (4-1) for the playoffs. Nice to hear but our miserable team is still not winning me back...not with their appearances the last few years (especially in European matches...pure disappointment)

Down at Sauchiehall Street

Following Gavin Dunbar's indie guide to Glasgow, I ended up yesterday at Sauchiehall Street where (after all the shops) most of the bars are located (well at least a lot of the bars). The street is packed with a mix of classic pubs and rock bars (where you can find a lot of new bands playing from early afternoon). As a tribute (to Gavin and Glasgow bands in general) today's Tune of the Day is Camera Obscura's If Looks Could Kill. If only they could...

Happy May (Labor) Day

It is May (Labor) Day today (at least for Europeans) and while most are probably enjoying the holiday at home or some vacation place, some of us are instead working (or pretending to). Nevertheless, a tribute (yet another after yesterday's LSD tribute) to all workers and their fight against capitalism (although these days the workers' rights are stepped upon each day...guess we now know who won in the long run). 122 years have passed since May 1st 1886 and still 8-hours shifts seems like a dream for a lot of people in the world. I guess in 122 years from now we will still be fighting for the same things (or perhaps hope for even less).

The Team

Athens66 started off as a common project by a bunch of friends but quickly turned into almost a personal blog (although some remains of previous posts can still be found). Currently, the Team has been narrowed down to two members, who besides being old friends and schoolmates share the same joy for Music, Movies, Alcohol and Pro Evolution sessions.

The sole purpose of this blog is to shout out whatever comes in mind about movies, music, reality, fantasy and all the rest. Nothing posted here is to be taken seriously, but then again what is? Since this blog is still quite fresh, we are definitely open to suggestions and directions (although most of them will just be ignored)
