Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!
I’ve never been a true fan of Nick Cave, although I’ve always understood why so many people are obsessed with his music. So when Dig Lazarus Dig came out early March this year, I didn’t pay that much attention. Even the announcement of his next appearance here in Athens (which is actually today) didn’t make me pay any notice (since he’s back here almost every year). However, for some unknown reason (I can’t really remember why) I decided to give his new record a chance last week (finally).
Cave is now 50 and this is his 14th record with the Bad Seeds (24 years since their debut From her to Eternity back in 1984 and 28 years since Cave’s debut with The Birthday Party back in 1980). So what could you really expect from an artist that’s been rocking, performing and producing music for so long? To be honest, more of the same I guess. Well, once again I have been proven wrong (I don’t know why I say this with such pride).

Cave and the Seeds have just produced a truly amazing album. An album of such quality that most artists would only dream to achieve once in their career, but for Nick it’s just one more take on what he’s best in. Perhaps Grinderman’s experience has rejuvenated Cave and in Dig Lazarus Dig he found his good old self. The lyrics are dark, cynic and blasphemous enough (the Cave way). The music just flows perfectly from complex rhythms to breathtaking simplicity and harmony, always letting Cave be the protagonist in the tracks but never letting him too far ahead. The album itself is such a wonderful weave filled with energy (Dig Lazarus Dig), introversion (We Call Upon the Author) and despair (Jesus of the Moon). What can I say, this album is simply amazingly. Cave is back for good…
